Dag studied law in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The intense political repression he faced in his country forced him to emigrate, crossing the desert between Sudan and Libya in the winter of 2005. In Libya, he was a survivor of smugglers’ violence and torture by the Libyan police. Finally in Rome, Dag attended “Marco’s school,” a meeting point and place of rebirth for many African immigrants. Here, he was able to come to terms with the psychological effects of that journey, trying to break the silence about the atrocities in the country under Colonel Gaddafi’s rule.
A journey of pain and dignity, one of Andrea Segre’s first works (co-directed by the protagonist, Dagmawi Yimer) and a precious firsthand account of how Libya, on behalf of and thanks to funding from Italy and Europe, controls migration flows from Africa. Dag’s face reflects a hidden, ignored history, for which Italy and Europe bear direct responsibility.
